Textile industry in Benin: new factory promotes economic growth

In the field: SERV is supporting the construction of the first vertically integrated textile factory

An innovative textile factory in Benin is set to transform the local industry. The new textile processing and finishing plant will span the entire value chain from cotton processing to the finished product. The Zug-based general contractor Africa Textile Management Services AG (ATMS) is taking part in the construction of the textile factory together with several Swiss sub-contractors. The BTEX (Benin Textile SA) project is being implemented as part of a collaboration between ARISE IIP, CDC Benin, SODECO and cotton ginneries from the Republic of Benin.

Promoting sustainable development

The project, located in the newly established Glo Djibé industrial hub outside of Cotonou, Benin, aims to reduce the country’s reliance on exports and boost the local economy through vertical integration. This means that all production steps – from obtaining the raw materials to manufacturing the end product – are completed within the business. Local processing is designed not only to cut costs and shorten transport routes, but also to create thousands of jobs. This will promote sustainable economic growth and support the achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

SERV as a key player

SERV is playing a key role in the project by insuring deliveries made by several Swiss subcontractors to Benin. This support helps to minimise risks and promote Swiss exports at the same time. SERV’s commitment stresses the importance of reliable and long-term trade relations and shows how Switzerland is using practical solutions to respond to global challenges.
