Calik Enerji Swiss and partners are driving the energy transition in Kosovo
Calik Enerji Swiss AG, together with several Swiss suppliers, is creating a wind farm in Kosovo. The project, which is pioneering in multiple respects, is secured with buyer credit insurance from Swiss Export Risk Insurance SERV.

In order to combat climate change, countries need to move away from fossil fuels while at the same time addressing rising energy consumption. To make the country less dependent on coal, a wind farm is to be built near the village of Zatriq, in southwest Kosovo. The planned installation features twelve wind turbines with a total installed capacity of 73 megawatts. This will provide clean electricity for around 50 000 people and further support the energy transition in the Balkans.
The wind farm is being realised by Calik Enerji Swiss as the general contractor. The project is majority-owned by Calik Renewables AG, a Switzerland-based renewable energy investment company within the Çalık Enerji Group, operating on an arm’s-length basis.. Calik Enerji Swiss is a Swiss subsidiary of the Turkish energy group Çalık Enerji and is based in Lucerne. Calik Enerji Swiss drew extensively on Swiss know-how for the realisation of the wind farm. Eight Swiss companies were taken on board as suppliers.
A pioneering project in multiple respects
Zatriq wind farm is a pioneering project for Kosovo, where renewable energies currently make up less than five per cent of the energy supply. At the same time, it is also a pioneering project for Calik Enerji Swiss, marking the company’s first renewable energy installation. It is the first renewable energy project outside Türkiye for the parent company Çalık Enerji.
Even for SERV, which is covering the transaction with buyer credit insurance, it is a pioneering project: Zatriq wind farm is the first wind energy project supported by SERV. The project forms part of SERV’s Pathfinding Strategy, which aims to facilitate Swiss companies’ access to international infrastructure projects.
Swiss participation is the key to success
Two things were required to get the project successfully underway: technical expertise and secured financing. The former was primarily provided by the Swiss companies involved in the project, which contributed a considerable amount of know-how in multiple fields, such as wind turbine construction, transport and logistics for major infrastructure projects and organising power networks in general.
The financing, which was arranged in the spring of 2025, is essentially based on buyer credit insurance, which SERV has provided for the project. This insurance is worth 105 million euros and is valid for 15 years.
Using trust and monitoring to overcome complexity
Infrastructure projects such as the construction of a wind farm are complex undertakings. Not all factors are fully known at the start of the project. During the construction period, requirements can change, unforeseen structural challenges may arise, some parties involved may bail out and new ones may arrive. “In complex infrastructure projects, the procurement plan is often not elaborated in detail at the beginning,” explains Milena Djurovic Raspopovic, in charge of the project at SERV.
This makes it all the more important to secure financing and verify it regularly. SERV therefore set up a monitoring process in collaboration with Calik Enerji Swiss to guarantee Swiss participation. “In the end, however, the real secret to success is always trust and partnership,” says Milena Djurovic Raspopovic.
