What opportunities does a placement with SERV provide?
Julia Lüscher is studying for a Master’s in International Affairs at the University of St. Gallen and working in parallel in the Project Financing & Infrastructure department at SERV. In this interview, Julia talks about her experiences as a trainee working 50 per cent of full-time hours.
What do you particularly like about SERV as an employer?
I especially appreciate the flexibility over how I arrange my working hours. It’s very important to me to be able to combine my studies and my work placement as effectively as possible.
Does SERV support you in your personal and professional development?
Yes, absolutely. If I have an idea or express an interest in a particular area of specialisation, I am not just listened to, but actively encouraged. Particularly in underwriting – which was an area I had little experience of before my placement – I’ve been able to acquire knowledge and develop new skills. If someone needs help or support, it is always forthcoming from their colleagues. By interacting with so many different people I don’t just learn professionally, but I also benefit on a personal level.
How would you describe the atmosphere at SERV?
SERV has an international culture, and that is reflected in our day-to-day work. There is a strong emphasis on teamwork, but at the same time you are free to work solo on a task. Overall, there is a healthy balance: although projects can be challenging, we still maintain the right mix between work and private life.
One thing that has been very helpful to me is that I can learn a lot from my work that is relevant to my studies. My colleagues, who come from a range of professional and academic backgrounds, are eager to help, and there is a great deal of knowledge I can draw on.
What benefits has your placement with SERV brought?
I’m gathering practical work experience in a new working environment. The flexibility is also a big plus for me, because it allows me to combine my placement with my studies. Dealing with colleagues from different specialist areas is incredibly exciting and rewarding – you are constantly learning. My job with SERV is the ideal opportunity to develop both personally and professionally, without neglecting my studies.
